The bioeconomy, by using renewable raw materials instead of fossil resources, helps to mitigate climate change by reducing emissions from fossil carbon in the atmosphere and capturing more carbon in the biosphere. The transition to a bio-based economy is necessary to ensure that future generations have adequate resources and living conditions—so, in other words, to ensure sustainable growth.
We at Fortum want to engage our customers and the society to join the change for a cleaner world and sustainable solutions. Fortum Bio2X is a development program that aims to bring to market products utilizing alternative raw materials (lignocellulosic biomasses including straw, bagasse etc) made from renewable biomass and agricultural by-products. We use our inhouse Chempolis Formico technology having >90% resource efficiency for converting these biomasses to a valuable products.
In Chempolis technology, sustainable raw materials such as agro-residues can be fractionated in bio-refineries and processed further to yield high-value products that can serve as an alternative to fossil-based and other environmentally detrimental raw materials in many industry sectors. Fractionation of biomass separates it into lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose with high yields and purities. These intermediate products can be further refined into ethanol, textiles, biochemicals, cosmetics, and other industrial products.
We have made our first step by investing in a commercial biorefinery in India. The biorefinery being set up in Assam uses bamboo as raw material to produce bioethanol, biochemicals and bio-coal. The bioethanol is blended with petrol, while the biocoal is used to generate heat and power for the refinery. The excess power is used to replace fossil-based electricity production. Even a single biorefinery of this kind can generate employment and revenue at every stage, from bamboo cultivation to extraction to transportation.
In the long run, we want to minimize biomass-based energy production and focus on high- value products from lignin. Owing to its aromatic structure and intrinsic binder, UV stability and antioxidant functionality, it can be used to amend and even replace fossil-based materials in various end applications – and thus, to reduce the carbon footprint of the end product.
With an aim to significantly increase the value of lignocellulosic biomass by fractionating it into high-quality cellulose, hemi-cellulose, and lignin and further process them for commercial applications, we are also planning to build a state-of-the-art R&D facility in India collaborating with various research and technology partners to develop sustainable products from biomass. In the future, we are looking forward to setup similar new bio-refinery focused on producing such products from different agro-residues abundantly available in India
